Pimentel ad on Senate presidency needs context

A Koko Pimentel campaign ad claiming speedy passage of bills when he was Senate president needs context.

The ad posted on the Senate bet’s Facebook page claimed he “acted quickly” on the passage of the tax reform, free tuition, free internet access, free irrigation and “many more” laws:

Noong siya ang pinuno ng senado, mabilis kumilos para bumaba ang personal income tax, magka-free tuition, free internet access, free irrigation at marami pa (When he was Senate president, he quickly acted to lower the personal income tax, provide free internet access, free irrigation and many more).

Data from the third regular session of the 17th Congress, which include the period Pimentel was Senate president, show a mixed timeframe range; it took the Senate from 90 to 256 days to pass the four laws mentioned in the ad.

Eighteen other bills the Senate passed under Pimentel’s watch took as few as 21 days to as many as 569 days. Of all the 22 bills, 14 fell below the average of 262 days.

Pimentel, Senate president from July 14, 2017 to May 21, 2018, was succeeded by Vicente Sotto.
